Kratom 101: What You Need to Know

Kratom is one of the most-asked-about products at the shop, and there's a lot of misinformation out there. This guide is the same rundown we give in person when a first-time customer walks up to the counter — what it is, how the strains differ, what forms it comes in, and how to buy it without getting burned by low-quality product.
What kratom actually is
Kratom comes from the leaves of Mitragyna speciosa, a tree native to Southeast Asia. The leaves are dried and ground into a fine powder, which is then either sold as powder, packed into capsules, or brewed into liquid extracts. The two main active compounds are mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, and their ratio changes based on the strain and how the leaves were dried.
Strains: red, green, white
The color refers to the vein of the leaf when it was harvested and how it was dried. Red vein strains are the most common and are known for being mellow and relaxing. Green vein sits in the middle — balanced, often chosen for daytime use. White vein is the most stimulating of the three and is typically used earlier in the day. Yellow and gold strains exist too, and are usually blends or specialty-dried leaves.
Forms: powder, caps, extracts
Loose powder is the most cost-effective and lets you dial in your own serving size. Capsules are convenient and travel-friendly but cost more per gram. Liquid extracts and shots are the most concentrated — they hit faster but are easy to overdo if you're new, so start small.
Buying from a reputable shop
The kratom market has zero federal quality standards, so where you buy matters. Look for shops that carry AKA GMP-qualified brands, batch-test for contaminants, and can tell you where their product is sourced.
